This course provides advanced and intensive training in the practical skills, technical, navigational  theoretical knowledge for small boat owners (<less than 10m). We train on a 6.8m rigid inflatable rescue craft.

Courses are conducted from:

  • Our Base  - Mosman Bay on the beautiful Sydney Harbour.
  • Your Base – Upon request we can conduct courses in other locations – such as Rose Bay, Manly or Inner West or we can come to your sailing club or facility.

The course is a 2-day course split between technical and practical skills.

Description

RYA Powerboat Level 2 is extremely useful as it entitles holders to a New South Wales Boat Licence in Australia and an International Certificate of Competence for Europe. In the UK, it is considered a small boat driving licence.

It is also a legal requirement for anyone driving the tender to a superyacht or working as an RYA windsurfing or dinghy sailing instructor.

In Australia, it provides an easy pathway to the AMSA Coxswain Grade 3 for those considering commercial work on boats.

Course Overview / Syllabus

Day 1 - Learn to drive the boat

Powerboat theory

  • Personal equipment (clothing, lifejackets etc)
  • Parts of the boat (basic terminology)
  • Types of craft  (hull types, engines, fuel)
  • Essential weather (forecasts, sea state, effect of wind and tide)
  • Buoyage, basic collision regulations (IRPCS)

Practical skills

  • Safety and preparation (kill cord, life jackets, communications, crew position and safety)
  • High-speed handling (trim, stability, driving position, crew safety, waves, quick stop)
  • Low-speed handling (close quarters, standing off, wind and tide)
  • Seamanship skills (anchoring, berthing, handling lines, mooring buoys)
  • Emergency situations (types of emergencies, man overboard recovery, marine radio distress calls)

 

Day 2  - Plan and execute a safe passage

Powerboat theory

  • Intro to marine charts  and navigation
  • Pilotage and passage planning
  • Engine and fuel management
  • GPS (waypoints and route planning)
  • legal responsibilities and obligations.

Practical skills

  • Pilotage and passage-making/crew roles
  • High-speed handling/low-speed handling
  • Seamanship skills (anchoring, berthing, handling lines, mooring buoys)
  • Rules of the road (application of basic IRPCS whilst underway)
  • Emergency situations (basic towing)

 

Equipment and instructors

The course will be taught by experienced RYA-qualified instructors using our high-speed, rigid-inflatable rescue craft.

You will spend the first day learning how to drive the boats safely and the second-day developing basic pilotage skills, which you will then use to execute a short passage.

We operate in small groups, according to strict teaching ratios, to ensure all participants have plenty of time in the driver's seat and are in charge of the boat.

Course Prerequisites

Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Powerboat Handling, NSW Boat Licence course or equivalent power boating experience.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to support their Sailing Club as a support boat for either racing or learn to sail courses.  A [person seeking to obtain their ICC for Powerboat hire / charter overseas.

Course Outcome

You will gain your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate on completion.

What to Bring

Soft soled shoes (white if possible), hat, sunscreen, shoes, wind/rain jacket, gloves (recommended) and a curious mind.

Location / Venues

Meet at Atlas Sailing Office at Mosman Bay Marina - All day andf 4hr parking nearby.  Or other location by arrangement.

The student to Instructor ratios are:  4:1 with a single vessel and Instructor onboard.

Generally: Courses are scheduled upon request / appointment: 

  • Theory and Practical Sessions:  held on Thurs / Friday on a monthly basis; or
  • By Appointment

Course can be arranged as 2-day weekend courses if required – some additional costs.

Atlas Sailing abides by the RYA Instructor/Participant ratios; hence places are strictly limited. All programs are subject to change with limited notice, based on demand and availability and weather conditions.  Cancellation, Abandonment or Shortening of course duration for weather conditions will at the sole discretion of Atlas Sailing Instructors - with guidance being winds above 20knts (gusting above 24knts) or Thunderstorm activity.

Please read the Atlas Sailing refund policy before registering. Refunds will not be provided for cancellations less than 14 days prior to the event as there are limited places available. If a session is cancelled due to weather, or another force majeure circumstance, participants will be offered a place on another scheduled date or a full refund.
