Safety Boat Operators Course

This course provides the skills needed to support water-based activities at clubs, schools and outdoor recreation centres. You'll learn about racecourse design, practise on-water rescue of dinghies and gain an awareness of techniques to support kite surfers and kayaks.

Courses are conducted from:

  • Our Base  - Mosman Bay on the beautiful Sydney Harbour.
  • Your Base –Upon request we can conduct courses in other locations – such as Rose Bay, Manly or Inner West or we can come to your sailing club or facility.

The course is a 12-hr course split between 4 hrs of theory and 8 hrs on water training.

Course Overview / Syllabus

Our Safety Boat Operator course is aimed at people with a desire to be in charge of a safety boat, particularly those who wish to assist their clubs or associations with the control and support of racing programs and other training courses. During this Course you will learn the skills needed to operate a Safety Boat and support other water-based activities.

Rules and Regulations for Safety Boat Operation

  • Apply regulations relevant to the operation of a safety boat
  • Apply regulations relevant to the navigation of a safety boat
  • Access and interpret weather and tidal information relevant to the safe operation of a safety boat.

 Plan and prepare for Safety Boat Operations

  • Prepare all equipment for safety boat operations
  • Inspect and prepare vessel to ensure it is seaworthy for safety boat operations.

 Secure Vessels During Safety Boat Operations

  • Describe and demonstrate procedures for securing vessels during safety boat operations

 

Manoeuvre a Vessel in Safety Boat Operations

  • Direct vessel and supervise crew to anchor and moor the safety vessel
  • Direct vessel and supervise crew to retrieve a person overboard
  • Direct vessel and supervise crew to rescue a vessel or person in a lee-shore situation
  • Direct vessel and supervise crew to establish single and multiple tows with power and sailing vessels
  • Direct vessel and supervise crew to right a capsized or inverted sailing boat.

 Apply Safety Management During Safety Boat Operations

  • Delegate and supervise responsibilities and duties
  • Brief crew and establish communication signals
  • Manage foreseeable emergencies by assessing risks and determining responses to potential hazards

Course Prerequisites

Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Powerboat Handling, NSW Boat Licence course or equivalent power boating experience.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to support their Sailing Club as a support boat for either racing or learn to sail courses. This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Sailing Coach.

Course Outcome

You will gain your Safety Boat Operator completion certificate.

Learn how to safely rescue other craft, recover persons from the water, re-right capsized boats and where to position your boat on a racecourse.

What to Bring

Soft soled shoes (white if possible), hat, sunscreen, shoes, wind/rain jacket, gloves (recommended) and a curious mind.

Meet at Atlas Sailing Office at Mosman Bay Marina - 4hr parking nearby.  Or other location by arrangement.

Times and Bookings

Generally: Courses are scheduled upon request / appointment: 

  • Practical Sessions:  held on Sat  or  Sun – 9am-5pm (8hrs) , or
  • Theory Sessions – to be held in the week immediately prior to the Practical session, either as :
    • Classroom – on  Thursday or Friday evenings between 5-9pm: or
    • Remote Learning - as 2 x 2hr sessions  between 1830-2030.

Course can be arranged as 2 day weekend courses if required – some additional costs

Atlas Sailing abides by the Australian Sailing Instructor/Participant ratios; hence places are strictly limited. All programs are subject to change with limited notice, based on demand and availability and weather conditions.  Cancellation, Abandonment or Shortening of course duration for weather conditions will at the sole discretion of Atlas Sailing Instructors - with guidance being winds above 20knts (gusting above 24knts) or Thunderstorm activity. 

Please read the Atlas Sailing refund policy before registering. Refunds will not be provided for cancellations less than 14 days prior to the event as there are limited places available. If a session is cancelled due to weather, or another force majeure circumstance, participants will be offered a place on another scheduled date or a full refund.

Prerequisites

You should have completed an AS Start Powerboating or RYA Powerboat Level 2 course or have equivalent experience.

This course provides advanced and intensive training in the practical skills, technical, navigational theoretical knowledge for small boat owners (<less than 10m). We train on a 6.8m rigid inflatable rescue craft.
