Atlas Sailing’s Yachtmaster Exam Preparation Course is aimed at those who already have the required knowledge, skills, and experience for the Yachtmaster Exam but would benefit from some practice before the examination.
Course Outline
We aim to coach, advise and polish your existing skills to make you exam ready. During the training days, you will practice boat handling, safety and emergency procedures, pilotage, and navigation. We ensure you run through many of the exercises you can expect to encounter in the exam.
You will be asked to demonstrate your boat handling, seamanship, and navigation skills (under power and sail) in various conditions and situations by day and night. You will also be given several simulated safety and emergency scenarios to manage.
During the examination, the RYA Yachtmaster Examiner will want to be satisfied with your practical skills on board, your theory knowledge, and your ability to manage the crew safely. A primary assessment is whether or not you are safe.
The yacht and the instructor
You will join a small group (max 4) on board one of our RYA-approved Beneteau 40.7 training yacht. The training days will be run by a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor who will have an intimate knowledge of what is required for the exam.
Location and weather
Exams proceed in most weather conditions and usually operate around Sydney Harbour and offshore (nearby).
Yachtmaster Examination
This is booked separately. An RYA-qualified examiner will be engaged to undertake the exam – this can be coordinated with the Preparation Course or done separately.
Exams can be done on our yacht ($450/day) or your yacht with our extra safety gear for hire if required to meet the RYA standard. Once the Examiner is onboard, our instructor will step off - then it's up to you!

- 3 days tuition approx. 8 hrs per day including a night pilotage (3-4hrs)

- Our training vessel RYA safety standard and has an enclosed bathroom on board.
What to Bring
- Soft soled shoes (white if possible), hat, sunscreen, shoes, wind/rain jacket, gloves (recommended) and a curious mind.
- Please bring your own lunch and snacks.
- We provide tea, coffee, and water on board.
- The RYA exam fee is payable to the examiner on the day. (Yachtmaster Coastal $405, Yachtmaster Offshore $465)

Before you start
Our Yachtmaster prep and exam week is for candidates who are 90% prepared for their exam and just need a bit of polish to get through. Before joining us, you must ensure your theory knowledge is up to speed. The week doesn't allow time to teach you the IRPCS, tidal heights, or navigation.
If you are in any way uncertain of your theory knowledge, you should attend a Yachtmaster Shore-based Theory course before you submit for examination.

Yachtmaster minimum sea time requirements
v For Yachtmaster Coastal, it's 30 days on board, two days as skipper, 800 miles, and 12 night hours.
v For holders of the RYA Coastal Skipper certificate, the seatime requirement is reduced to 20 days on board, two days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours
v For Yachtmaster Offshore - 50 days on board, five days as skipper, 2500 miles
v 5 x Yachtmaster qualifying passages over 60 nautical miles, including two overnight and two as skipper

Yachtmaster commercial use
If you intend to use your Yachtmaster certificate commercially anywhere in the world, you will need
v An ISAF-approved Sea Survival qualification.
v RYA online Professional Practices and Responsibilities course (PPR).
v To apply for the AMSA Sailing Master Offshore NC, which is a domestic Certificate of Competency for commercial use in Australia, you will also need
- RYA Diesel Engine certificate
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- A certificate of medical fitness for your area of operation is also required.
- In Australia, an AMSA 1850 medical covers near-shore operations.
- In the UK/Europe, an MCA ML5 medical is usually sufficient
What happens if I fail the Yachtmaster exams?
We do our best to make sure that you don't. But if you do, you'll go away with an action plan to complete. Usually, this involves revising some missing skills or knowledge and then resitting the exam.
