Description

The CYCA Winter Series is one of the most competitive winter events every year.  12 Races - 3 Women's Helm and 9 Pointscore Races between 27 April and 13 July.  A great way to spend Winter Sundays on Sydney Harbour.  Join our Experienced Skippers / Instructors for an informative, safe and multi-functional racing experience.  You’ll be given guidance in all aspects of the yacht setup, sailing procedures and racing tactics.  Over the course of the series, we will rotate crew around the various roles and allow for some helming during the race.

Course Outline

The popular CYCA Winter Series began in its current format in 1949 and has grown over the years to become Australia’s largest ongoing series, with fleets averaging 140+ boats.  The LGT Crestone Winter Series 2024 includes ten pointscore races, which are bookended by two of the three Women’s Winter Series races.

The pursuit start begins at 1130hrs, and the time limit for the race is five hours.

Description

The Atlas Racing Team series program includes some tuition, race training and race craft on Sydney Harbour before the race and afterwards. 

• Race Training as a Team - You train and compete on board either our Jarkan 39 race-tuned yacht or Hick 30 Sports keelboat.  During our training sessions you learn about the boat setup, race crew roles, hoisting sails, trimming, tacking and gybing.  Also, thre is an unliomited number of questions to be asked by crew members.
• Race Competitively as a Team - training together gives the crew the chance to familiarise themselves with the boat and to settle into roles to race competitively.
• Race Planning / Strategies / Tactics - having developed your spinnaker handling skills you go on to learn rules, tactics and strategy on the race course.
• Race Series - the Winter series is conducted by CYCA and often features over 140 yachts.  It is a pursuit race based on handicap times – so the starts are slightly less stressful and you know exactly where you are against your competitors (usually in close visual contact).  This is a great opportuity to get into the Sydney racing scene and meet yacht owners and crew members for a drink or two after a day's racing.
• Maintenance Day(s) – we will hold two maintenance days during the series for those who want to learn more about keeping a racing yacht in good trim.  Actibvities may include:  small repairs and maintenance items, sail washing, checking lines for wear and tear, rig check, pressure cleaning decks, internal clean and even hull cleaning (for the brave of heart under supervision using an underwater breathing apparatus).

Before you start

• Prior Racing Experience – no mandatory requirement – some experience is helpful.  We encourage you to do some lessons / training courses with us as part of the Australian Sailing program on our keelboat (Surpise 25 / Hick 30).  Note - all of our sailing courses offer a free race experience as part of the package. 
• Australian Sailing Number - is required to particapate in any race.

Price(s)

• Single Race – $75pp for an individual race.
• Half Race Series (up to 6 races) - choose, book and pay 5 races (@$75) =  $375 and we'll give you one (1) additional race for free (book on line or phone booking after purchase).
• Full Race Series (up to 10 races) – choose, book and pay 10 races (@ $75) = $750 and we'll give you two (2) additional races for free (book on line or phone booking after purchase).
• Min Age – 16 yrs.
• Refunds and Transfers – if the race event is cancelled by CYCA or Atlas Sailing – we will convert to a training day or transfer your race to another series.  For half or full race series the “free races" are designed to provide for cancellation / transfers / abandonments.  We reserve the right to turn any cancelled race into a training day.  Only if extraordinary circumstances, i.e. more than 2 races are cancelled, will we provide refunds.

What to Bring

Soft soled shoes (white if possible), hat, sunscreen, shoes, wind/rain jacket, gloves (recommended) and a curious mind.

Meet at Atlas Sailing Office at Mosman Bay Marina - 4hr parking nearby.  Rushcutters Bay pickup to be Yarranabee Wharf.
